For the first time since pre-COVID, Maricopans will be treated to the energy and theatrics of lucha libre this weekend.
That’s right — Mexican-style wrestling is returning to the city’s annual Copa Cultural Night on Saturday at Copper Sky Regional Park.
Lucha libre is a theatrical style of professional wrestling that originated in Mexico in the early 1900s. Compared to the American-style wrestling you see on TV, lucha libre is faster-paced and more acrobatic, not to mention the colorful masks that are integral to each luchador’s identity.
Dom Vitalli of Phoenix Championship Wrestling said showcasing lucha libre for the community is a meaningful opportunity.
“It highlights an art form that has strong cultural ties and generational history,” Vitalli told InMaricopa. “It gives families and residents an opportunity to experience a piece of that tradition up close, promotes cultural appreciation, and creates a shared community moment through live entertainment.”
The event kicks off at 4 p.m. with an interactive, hour-long seminar. Members of Phoenix Championship Wrestling’s SlamU will share the history behind the sport. Then, promptly at 5 p.m., the bell rings — and the luchadores enter the ring. Matches will run until 7:30 p.m.
Want to make your lucha experience even better? Grab a sloppy-lote with a virgin michelada from Sloppy Toppings Snack Bar, or carne asada fries with an agua fresca from Cobber’s Cravings.
The wrestling excitement is just one of more than a dozen entertainment options at Copa Cultural Night. Other performances include baile folklórico, Chinese lion dance, stilt walkers and bagpipes.
