A Maricopa mother was arrested Saturday after police said she locked her 15-year-old daughter out of the family’s apartment for hours in 88-degree weather with no food or water.

A woman named Tahani M., no surname listed, was arrested April 25 on charges including felony child endangerment, according to a probable cause statement filed in Western Pinal Justice Court.

Police said the incident began around 4 p.m. at an apartment on Honeycutt Avenue, where Tahani allegedly locked the teen out of the residence after a verbal dispute between the two.

The teenager called 911 after trying to enter the apartment complex for about 15 minutes, according to the court document. Police said she was outside in high temperatures with no food or water.

Officers tried to reach Tahani by phone, leaving a voicemail and texting her. They also pounded on the apartment door and announced police were outside, according to the probable cause statement.

Police said Tahani contacted a Maricopa Crisis Resource Navigator around 7:10 p.m. and was advised that abandoning her child was a crime. Tahani then hung up and blocked the navigator, according to the document.

Around 7:30 p.m., Tahani called police and said she did not realize her daughter had left the house, according to the probable cause statement. She allegedly told police she saw the officer’s calls, texts and voicemails, but her phone died and she took a three-hour nap instead of charging it and calling back.

Tahani arrived at the Maricopa Police Department around 8:45 p.m. and was read her Miranda rights, according to the document.

During an interview, Tahani allegedly said her daughter ran away earlier that morning without permission and that officers brought her back to the residence. She said she later went to the fourth floor to “pace” and speak to her brother about the teen staying with him for the evening.

Police said the teen was ringing the apartment doorbell, which Tahani said sends a phone notification. Tahani denied seeing the notifications but said she saw the officer’s calls, text and voicemail, according to the probable cause statement.

Tahani told police she went back home and went to bed with her 4-year-old son. She said she never told the teen to leave the residence and thought she was in her bedroom the entire time, according to the document.

Police wrote that, due to inconsistencies in Tahani’s statements, the teen being outside for a prolonged period and Tahani’s lack of response for three hours, Tahani “recklessly endangered” the teen by placing her in a situation where her safety was potentially in danger.

The probable cause statement also says Tahani had kicked the teen out of the apartment building on several previous occasions, and police referenced multiple prior reports involving similar incidents or domestic violence between the two.

Tahani was booked on suspicion of child endangerment and criminal nuisance.

  1. The poor baby. Left outside in 88 degree weather, on a nice breezy day. Must have been horrible. I say no charges, the incorrigible 15 yo could probably use to learn about consequences.

    1. Locking a child outside isn’t a ok punishment for anything. A breeze isn’t gonna do that much when you’re stuck outside without any water to replenish your body with.
