Another place to shop for shut-eye may be on the way to Maricopa.

Scottsdale-based developer SimonCRE wants to bring Mattress Firm to the city by renovating a 3,400-square-foot building near the Shops at Maricopa Village, according to documents released yesterday to InMaricopa.

The building, located on the northwest corner of Hathaway Avenue and John Wayne Parkway, formerly housed Sun Life Family Health Center. The developers propose installing a new storefront with more windows and more attractive landscaping.

The property would otherwise “retain a current architectural styling that complements the city of Maricopa,” a project narrative read.

Future customers could access the site from existing driveways on Hathaway Avenue and would keep the current 18 parking spaces.

A representative from SimonCRE did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the project narrative stated they were “excited about the opportunity to expand into the city of Maricopa.”

Houston-based Mattress Firm is the largest American mattress retailer with more than 2,300 stores in all 50 states. The company’s Maricopa application is only in the preliminary stages, and a timeline has not been confirmed.

Not the only place to hit the hay

For the last year, only one store has helped locals in finding the right mattress to sleep like a baby: Copa Mattress & Furniture. After learning that corporate giants were poking around, owner Bruce Kiraly said he’s not too worried.

“That’s cool for Maricopa, I’m fine with it. They’re a good competitor and they carry very good products,” he told InMaricopa today

Why is that?

“I don’t want to come off as braggadocious, but it helps me. Whenever I’m by Mattress Firm, my business goes up 50 to 80% because of the cross-traffic,” Kiraly said.

He would know — his family owns and operates another mattress store just a one-minute drive from a Mattress Firm in Tempe.

“They have premium products at premium prices,” Kiraly said. “The people who get sticker shock don’t stay there long … and when they find me, they’re happy to be there.”
