Maricopa Fire and Medical crews just after noon today responded to a kitchen fire on Portabello Street in the city’s Acacia Crossings neighborhood.

Spokesperson Monica Williams said the fire started when residents were cleaning their oven and residue buildup caught fire.

“It was quickly put out,” Williams said. There were no injuries.

Williams said today’s oven fire is “a good reminder to always have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen to help prevent a fire from spreading before emergency crews arrive.”

The fire was contained to the kitchen. The house sustained minor smoke damage, said Williams.

The incident follows a deadly August house fire in Glennwilde, where flames spread through the attic before crews could arrive. Investigators said that blaze began in a trash can outside the home and quickly engulfed the structure, which was declared a total loss.

Fire officials say the two incidents highlight how small fires can escalate rapidly, and how early detection and quick reporting can prevent tragedy.
