Prolific muralist to freehand water tank

If the sky looked like it had a few extra clouds today, don’t worry, your eyes didn’t deceive you.

This morning Casa Grande artist Mauriel “Mory” Morejon started work on the city’s newest mural — this time enveloping a Global Water Resources tank just south of West Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and Santa Rosa Parkway.

He’s the artist behind another mural at the Maricopa Museum and Visitor Center that debuted last July. He has painted more than 200 backyard murals in the city.

When it’s done, the acrylic fresco will cover a 25-square-foot area of the water tank’s north side, Morejon said. It is made to be viewable from north of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, along the highway.

Morejon painted the sky today, and tomorrow he will wrap up with a landscape featuring mountains, horses and a river.

“This spread is without any projection,” Morejon told InMaricopa. “It’s just out of my mind straight to the wall.”

The city is paying the muralist to complete the work.

The project cost the city $10,000, according to a city statement. The project is a collaborated effort between the city and Global Water, which provided the unconventional canvas for the project.

The city’s push for more attractive public art includes this, a herd of painted wild horses and traffic-signal boxes as a part of its arts initiative.
