Rollover driver ID’d — cops say he had open liquor bottles, 3 warrants

A silver Nissan Altima rests after a rollover crash on John Wayne Parkway near Honeycutt Avenue on April 23, 2026. Police arrested Samuel M. Lewis.

A driver arrested after a rollover crash snarled rush-hour traffic on John Wayne Parkway Thursday had open liquor containers in his car and three active warrants, according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa.

Maricopa police responded to the single-vehicle crash at 4:48 p.m. April 23 near State Route 347 and Honeycutt Avenue after multiple callers reported a vehicle had rolled over and come to rest in the median.

Officers arrived and found one occupant in the driver’s seat. He was later identified as Samuel M. Lewis, 31, according to the court document.

Police said Lewis provided officers with a suspended Arizona driver’s license. As he got out of the vehicle, officers “could immediately observe a number of open liquor containers in plain view,” the probable cause statement said.

Lewis also had “a heavy odor of alcohol” on his breath and was “staggering and stumbling” while standing with fire personnel who had arrived to check him out at the scene, according to the document.

Police said Lewis admitted to Maricopa Fire/Medical Department personnel he had been drinking. He agreed to field sobriety testing and showed “every cue of impairment” during horizontal gaze nystagmus testing, according to the probable cause statement.

Police also found Lewis had three active warrants: one out of Eloy Municipal Court with a $2,500 cash bond, one out of Central Pinal Justice Court with a $433 cash bond and one out of Pinal County Superior Court in a burglary case with a $2,500 secured bond.

Lewis was arrested on those warrants and new charges of DUI, aggravated DUI, open container in a vehicle and driving on a suspended license.

He was taken to Exceptional Hospital, where he was medically cleared for jail. Police said a consent blood draw was completed after an admin per se form was read to Lewis.

He was then booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center.
