A 42-year-old Maricopa man was arrested Feb. 19 after police say he threatened to decapitate his roommate with a hacksaw and was later found in his backyard wearing only his underwear.
Julian G. Valencia was booked into the Pinal County jail on charges of disorderly conduct, criminal damage and threatening or intimidating, all domestic violence related, according to a probable cause statement filed in Western Pinal Justice Court.
Officers were dispatched about 3:17 p.m. to a home on Ibis Way in the Senita neighborhood after a caller reported that the suspect had threatened a roommate with a hacksaw. The original caller told dispatch the parties had separated but provided limited details.
Roughly 20 minutes later, the roommate contacted police and reported Valencia was acting belligerent, punching holes in walls and running up and down the street yelling and screaming before locking himself inside the home.
When officers arrived, they spoke with people at the residence who said Valencia had been yelling and screaming for most of the day.
Police deployed a drone and obtained a visual of Valencia in the backyard wearing only his underwear, according to court documents. Officers were granted consent to enter the home and backyard, and Valencia was detained in handcuffs.
Under Miranda advisement, Valencia allegedly admitted to yelling and punching walls but became increasingly erratic during questioning, at times making nonsensical statements. Officers ultimately paused the interview.
A witness told police that earlier in the day Valencia had come into his room holding a large hacksaw and said he would “saw his head off.” The witness said he later took the saw away from Valencia out of fear it would be used to harm him.
Another resident showed officers a fist-sized hole next to an interior garage door and said it had not been there prior to that day.
When confronted about the hacksaw, Valencia initially denied threatening anyone but later allegedly said, “oh yeah I probably would say that,” according to the report. He also allegedly told officers he “likes to play” and made additional threatening statements referencing the saw and a knife.
Officers established probable cause to arrest Valencia on four domestic violence charges. The case is being transferred to Pinal County Superior Court.
