Student Choice High School in Maricopa is opening doors for students who need a different approach to learning.

Whether struggling in traditional classrooms, balancing work and family responsibilities, or returning after time away, students ages 14 to 21 are finding a supportive and flexible academic home at SCHS. The tuition-free public charter school offers open enrollment year-round and serves learners who need smaller class sizes, a self-paced curriculum, and one-on-one mentorship.

“Our mission is to motivate students to come to school and learn every day, to educate using the best possible curriculum, and to graduate students into a successful, productive, and exciting future,” the school states.

Flexible structure, personalized learning

Student Choice High School provides two distinct programs:
  • Grades 9–11 attend on-campus classes five days a week for a four-hour learning block, either in the morning or afternoon. Families provide their own transportation.
  • Grade 12 through age 21 follow a hybrid model, completing coursework online with on-campus support available as needed.

Students progress through coursework with flexible pacing, supported by a curriculum aligned with Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. All classes are led by highly qualified teachers, and students have 24/7 access to their coursework.

Each student is also paired with a mentor who helps them set short- and long-term academic and career goals. Mentors work closely with students to guide them through post-secondary planning and skill-building for life after graduation.

Meeting students where they are

The school serves a wide range of students, including those who:
  • Need flexible schedules due to jobs or family obligations
  • Are behind on credits or returning after a prolonged absence
  • Have struggled with grades or attendance in traditional schools
  • Prefer smaller class sizes and individualized instruction

Parent Rachele Maas, whose children include both graduates and current students of SCHS, praised the school’s attention to student needs.

“One-on-one teacher attention has made a huge difference for my kids,” she said. “At Student Choice, if my son has an issue with a lesson, he has a teacher to help him right away. Each student is seen, heard, and encouraged.”

Chris J., another parent, said the school transformed her son’s academic experience.

“Once we changed to Student Choice, it was like having a whole new child,” she said. “His grades improved, and he enjoyed going to school again.”

Students find support and success

Students say the school helped them reclaim their academic futures.

“Before enrolling, I felt I had no chance of finishing my education,” said student Ravyn Gosnell. “The system Student Choice offers is a great choice for anyone, especially for those that struggle in traditional schools.”

Camila Montano echoed the sentiment: “SCHS has helped me go from a C-D student back to an A-B student. I also have more time to do stuff outside of school, and I don’t have the stress and anxiety I had when I was online.”

Ethan Stone said the school helped him earn a diploma when he thought he would have to settle for a GED.

“Teachers gave me encouraging messages when I did something well,” he said. “This had never happened in past schools.”
