The U.S. Postal Service will close the Contract Postal Unit inside the Maricopa Library & Cultural Center on Sept. 27. The city received notice of the closure, but no explanation was given. They made the announcement this afternoon.
The auxiliary office opened in 2021 after residents raised concerns about long lines at the city’s only post office on Hathaway Avenue. At the time, officials said the library location would make postal services easier for a growing community, offering stamps and shipping from the growing east side.
In a news release this afternoon, city officials said they worked with USPS and the congressional delegation to try to keep the service in place but were unsuccessful.
“We know how valuable the CPU has been for residents,” said officials in the statement. “Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we’ve been unsuccessful in reversing the decision.”
Staff assigned to the unit will be relocated to other city roles where possible. After Sept. 27, residents will need to use the Hathaway Avenue post office for all services.
The city said it would notify the community if USPS changes course and allows the unit to reopen.
