If you’ve driven into or out of Maricopa recently, you’ve probably spotted the city’s newest painted traffic box — a splash of bright blooms at a busy corner.

Titled Blossoming Double Claw, the floral-themed piece by Tucson artist Jodie Lewers Chertudi now decorates the signal box at the corner of John Wayne Parkway and Lakeview Drive. It’s the 20th painted box to be completed in the city.

“City staff connected with Jodie as we were exploring Arizona-based artists for various projects and were inspired by her work and thought it would be a great addition to our signal boxes around town,” city spokesperson Monica Williams told InMaricopa. “We hope that it elevates the art scene here in Maricopa and inspires the creativity of others.”

Chertudi, raised in rural Pinal County, has a vibrant style that often draws inspiration from Arizona’s desert landscape. Her work joins a growing collection of public art in Maricopa — from other traffic boxes to murals, wild horses and pecan trees.
