For the first hour of Maricopa’s second “No Kings” protest, horns blared in support as cars breezed past more than 200 protesters holding signs and American flags on John Wayne Parkway this morning.
“No kings, no ICE, no wars, no kings.”
“I’d like that [orange] taco to go, please.”
“Not a paid protester, just an angry citizen.”
The gathering marked the city’s third “No Kings” protest, with Maricopans joining hundreds of other cities around the country and world to voice opposition to policies under President Donald Trump.
Some stood or sat in lawn chairs holding signs, while others held young children and even pets as passing drivers reacted. Plenty were still arriving with signs and water bottles in hand as this reporter left for another assignment.
“He has violated the Constitution, emasculated Congress and ignored the courts,” she told InMaricopa. “This is undermining our constitutional democracy and only ‘We the People’ can stop him through peaceful resistance.”
Attendees pointed to a wide range of concerns that brought them to the protest, including immigration enforcement, rising costs and international conflict.
Eli Woods of Hidden Valley stood on the sidewalk with his toddler, Peregrine, sitting on his shoulders. He said showing up in person matters.
“We can complain online all we want to, but if we don’t make ourselves known, that we’re out here and ready to stand up for our rights, then [that complaining] won’t matter,” he said.
Woods said he in particular was driven to attend based on changes in SNAP benefits that affected his family, as well as what he said is a “lack of due process” in immigration enforcement.
“What brought me out here is the state that this country is in now. The leader that we have promised [voters] everything, but he’s going against all his promises. It’s just crazy, it’s crazy,” he said. “He says ‘America First,’ but he’s putting America last.”
Washington said he was especially concerned about the rising prices in everyday necessities, the national debt rising beyond $38 trillion and the current war in Iran.
He said that while he does fine financially, it is difficult to watch others struggle.
“TSA workers deserve to be paid, but [Trump] wants to take $200 billion for his war that he started. That doesn’t make sense to me. It’s just sad to see,” Washington said.
But perhaps Province resident Susan Schauer summed up the frustration best.
“Our country is going to hell in a hand basket. We have to do something,” she said.
