Wendy’s back with beefier proposal for drive-thru No. 2

You’d better make room for that Dave’s Double and a large Frosty because Wendy’s is doubling down on building a second restaurant to Maricopa, this time off the main strip at The Wells.

Chicago-based Weaver Consultants Group on April 22 resubmitted a pre-application package for the fast-food giant at 41980 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, according to public records obtained by InMaricopa.

It would be built in the empty lot between Fast & Friendly Express Car Wash and Maricopa Kids’ Dentists.

Since we first reported plans to bring more yellow napkins and angular beef patties to the city in September, the restaurant has submitted three new documents to the Maricopa Development Services Department. The new paperwork includes a preliminary landscape plan and color elevations that show a sleek, modern building with brick, stone and stucco elements.

The proposed restaurant has been expanded to 2,300 square feet — an increase from the previously reported 2,200 square feet — and the site plan now includes 26 parking spaces, up from 22 in the September proposal.

And yes, there will be a drive-thru — no surprise for fans of spicy nugs on the go.

Landscaping will be incorporated throughout the site to enhance visual appeal and ensure environmental compliance, the developer said.

The project still needs the green light from city staff and the Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission, but once it’s approved, construction could move quickly. InMaricopa has reached out to Wendy’s corporate for an official comment and construction timeline.

Wendy’s overall has been a recent addition to Maricopa. The city’s first Wendy’s opened in 2019 inside a former Carl’s Jr. restaurant at 21000 N. John Wayne Parkway.

Ohio-based Wendy’s, the world’s third largest hamburger chain, is joining McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Panda Express and Burger King (maybe) as fast-food monoliths on the John Wayne strip that later added second locations at the city’s secondary retail hub along MCG. Weaver, the Wendy’s developer, would also develop that Burger King on behalf of local franchisee Bartlett Management Company.

The Wendy’s franchisee wasn’t named in the new packet.
