In the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, there’s one patrol beat larger than San Tan Valley, the county’s largest city.

That would be “Charlie 35,” the area surrounding Maricopa, according to Sheriff Ross Teeple. And typically, only one deputy is assigned to patrol Hidden Valley, Thunderbird Farms and the surrounding area.

“Anytime you get outside the city limits of Maricopa, that is an unincorporated area that my deputy is responsible for providing police services,” he said during a City of Maricopa Republican Club meeting Saturday at Calvary Chapel..

That is because San Tan Valley contracts PCSO for policing services and he’s quietly hoping that contract does not continue.

“If we no longer had to provide policing services for San Tan Valley, we can make the beats smaller, decrease response times, have more police presence in areas,” he said. “That would be my ultimate goal.”

Teeple also discussed seeking a pay raise for deputies, whom he said earn around 30% less than municipal police.

“The city of Queen Creek is one of the highest paid agencies in the state [and] city of Maricopa just got a huge pay raise as far as that goes for the police officers and they deserve it,” he said.

Traffic enforcement has also become a larger focus under Teeple’s administration. He said previous traffic enforcement efforts were concentrated in San Tan Valley, but Teeple opted to spread traffic units throughout the county.

“We have another squad of traffic deputies … and they’ve been hitting Maricopa,” he said.

The meeting also featured campaign remarks from Western Pinal Justice of the Peace Patricia Glover and Maricopa City Council candidate Adam Leach.

Glover discussed rising court caseloads as the city continues growing, while Leach advocated for finding ways to increase public safety’s budget.

  1. Teeple says San Tan Valley contracts the PCSO for services. So they pay for services rendered. Has nothing to do with Hidden Valley, Thunderbird Farms and surrounding. Teeple is playing politics instead of law enforcement duties. Time for him to go.

    1. Especially considering the STV contract will continue for the foreseeable future, as has been reported elsewhere.
