10 spots to salt your rim on National Tequila Day

If life handed you limes this morning, you might as well make margaritas — because it just so happens to be National Tequila Day.

Why does National Tequila Day fall on July 24 every year?

“Perhaps the originators imbibed a little too much on their own supply to remember,” National Today quipped, noting the holiday has unknown origins.

Mexico in 2018 ratified its own National Tequila Day on the third Saturday every March.

Whether you prefer it neat, served with salt and lime or inside a crafty cocktail, you can celebrate the blue agave plant’s spirit with a visit to one of these 10 Maricopa restaurants and bars.

Raceway Bar & Grill

49237 W. Papago Rd. #7

This outpost in Thunderbird Farms is known for its top-notch wings and Chicago pizzas, but it’s a good spot to stop for a shot or a sip after a long day. The watering hole known for its license plate-covered walls stocks six tequilas at the bar and serves classic palomas and margaritas.

Roots Eatery

20046 N. John Wayne Pkwy., Ste. 104

Did you know Maricopa’s hidden gem began serving cocktails last year? Pair one of their seasonal dishes with a refreshing adult slushie — margarita style — which includes a blanco tequila blended with mango purée, sour mix and ice.

Silver Spur Grill at The Duke

42660 Rancho El Dorado Pkwy.

This bar and grill sits just off the putting green at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado and features a couple of signature tequila cocktails on its menu. This includes the Duke Margarita, a spicy concoction made with 21 Seeds cucumber jalapeño tequila, lime juice and a Tajín rim.

The Roost Sports Bar & Café

20800 N. John Wayne Pkwy., Ste. 101

This sports bar serves at least five brands of tequila, including the classics — Don Julio and Patron. Because summer won’t be ending any time soon in Maricopa, try the strawberry lemonade margarita for a zesty take on the classic cocktail.

Nando’s Mexican Café

44460 W. Edison Rd.

Our newest Mexican restaurant boasts 10 specialty margaritas in flavors designed to entice your taste buds. This includes the Coparita, a spicy and sweet libation composed of a jalapeño-lime tequila, Cointreau, lemon-lime and guava nectar muddled with jalapenos and served with a Tajin rim.

Plaza Bonita Family Mexican Restaurant

21141 N. John Wayne Pkwy.

Celebrate tequila time by pairing your plate of pollo fundido or chicken mole with one of the restaurant’s 20 tequilas. They also serve 10 styles of margaritas, which includes five flavor options — like banana or peach — for their house marg.

Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers

20350 N. John Wayne Pkwy., Ste. 160

This sit-down burger joint hosts a full bar, so you’re likely to find your favorite tequila here. But if you’re in the mood for a sweeter sour drink, try their prickly pear margarita.

Headquarters Lounge

19640 N. Maricopa Rd.

In need of a divey, small-town atmosphere for your round of tequila shots? Headquarters Lounge features wood paneling, cash-lined ceilings, dim lighting and pool tables.

Chop, Block & Brew at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino

15406 N. Maricopa Rd.

This steakhouse lists six premium, barrel-aged tequilas on its drink menu, including the very pricey Clase Azul tequila reposado. For a refreshing take on the classic margarita, try their El Matador, which adds pineapple juice and a pinch of sea salt to the classic recipe.
