Maricopa residents will shave a couple of minutes off their commute to Phoenix by next summer.
The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a widening project this fall on 1.3 miles of John Wayne Parkway starting at Smith Enke Road to just north of the city limits.
The project will begin late next month and will focus on improving northbound lanes. This includes:
- Adding a third northbound through lane from State Route 238 to just north of the city limits
- Installing a curb, gutter and sidewalk along the east side of John Wayne Parkway from SR 238 to Lakeview Drive
- Adding a northbound acceleration lane that begins at Lakeview Drive

ADOT will also rebuild the existing median at Lakeview Drive and widen the intersection. Pavement repairs will accompany the project.
ADOT said the project’s completion is slated for summer 2024 and asked residents to “be mindful of construction workers in the work zone.”
Maricopa residents can sign up to receive updates about the project here.
