A 19-year-old driver was cited after Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers said he was traveling 100 mph on State Route 347 on New Year’s Eve.
According to DPS Highway Patrol, a trooper spotted the vehicle around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on SR 347 in Pinal County. The driver was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic without using turn signals. LiDAR confirmed the speed at 100 mph.
Troopers said it was raining at the time and the highway, a 65-mph zone, was wet.
The teen told the trooper he was speeding because he was rushing to see his girlfriend for New Year’s, according to DPS.
“Due to exigent circumstances, the driver was cited and released for criminal speed and reckless driving,” troopers said.
The vehicle, which DPS said belonged to the teen’s mother, was towed and impounded for 20 days. Troopers then took the driver to his residence, where he was released to his mother.
DPS highlighted the stop as part of its “Speeding Saturday” enforcement messaging, quipping: “New year, same Arizona.”
