Prosecutors have named the second of four child suspects in a November shooting death. Eliot Jackson, 17, is charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery.
He and Isaiah Bandin, 15, are charged in connection with the Nov. 22 murder of 16-year-old Esteban Valenzuela in the Maricopa Meadows.
InMaricopa was the first to report on the murder, arrests and charges.
Maricopa police on the night of the murder found a group of teenagers running from the scene near Dirk Street and Dancer Lane where Valenzuela had been shot dead in his car. The investigation revealed that the group of juveniles planned the armed robbery of 16-year-old Sergio Michael Munoz, a cannabis dealer.
When the armed robbery did not go as planned, the teens shot and killed Valenzuela, Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller, the Republican who assumed office Jan. 1, told InMaricopa today. The relationship between Munoz and Valenzuela was not disclosed in court documents.
“Teen violence is out of hand and will not be tolerated in Pinal County,” said Miller. “I instructed my office to charge these two teens as adults so that they may face consequences commensurate with the offenses. There will be no more slaps on the wrist in teen violence cases.”
Another 16-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl are also charged in connection with the murder. Their names and charges will be unsealed if and when prosecutors decide to charge them as adults in the case. Between Nov. 27 and Dec. 16, Maricopa Police Department arrested the group in a series of high-risk traffic stops and a SWAT raid of a home in The Villages at Rancho El Dorado.
Bandin was arraigned before a Pinal County Superior Court judge last month after he was advised in juvenile court to plead not guilty to the murder and armed robbery charges against him.
Court documents revealed that Bandin was armed while robbing his victim, “using threats or force against” him before the weapon was discharged.
While he was being held on a $1 million bond, a grand jury indicted Bandin on his charges Dec. 9. Jackson was indicted Dec. 23.
