A TikTok video posted Tuesday by user @yordanobravo is putting a fresh spotlight on a familiar danger along State Route 347: people on foot where almost no one should be walking.
In the video, Bravo is pulled over on the side of SR 347 when he spots a man walking along the highway and decides to stop. According to the post’s caption, the man’s name is José.
“I found José walking along the 347,” the caption reads. “You never really know why people end up out here, but what’s clear is how dangerous it is. Cars moving fast, long stretches with nothing around… yet it keeps happening more than people realize.”
An English transcript of the Spanish-language audio shows Bravo noticing José walking alone and appearing exhausted as he heads toward Maricopa.
“So, let’s see what’s going on,” the driver says in an English transcript of the Spanish-language audio. “We’re going to ask him what’s wrong, maybe see if we can give him a ride for a bit.”
Later in the video, after José reaches the vehicle, the driver asks where he is headed. José says he is going to Maricopa. When asked whether he is tired, he answers: “A lot.”
The video landed the same day Maricopa City Council spent 45 minutes discussing pedestrian safety in response to a recent string of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in the city, including the Feb. 12 crash that killed 24-year-old Madison Coughlin on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. “It’s insane to be on the roads and see how dumb people can be without realizing what it could cost them,” her sister, Kayla Coughlin of Rancho El Dorado, posted last week on Nextdoor.
Tuesday’s TikTok was not the first time someone walking on or near SR 347 has drawn alarm. In December, drivers reported seeing a man in a cape walking down the center median of the highway. Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers found him and gave him a ride away from the roadway. DPS spokesperson Bart Graves said at the time the man appeared to be dealing with mental health issues.
SR 347 is known more for speeding traffic and bumper cars than pedestrians. But Bravo’s video shows that despite the danger, people still end up walking alongside one of the West’s most dangerous roadways.
Fortunately, this encounter ended with José getting a ride to Maricopa. Watch it:

For clarity, when asked how long he’s been walking, the guy responded with “many miles”.
Sad situation and desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m glad this fellow stopped to help.
There is no public transportation between Maricopa and the world. This is an issue that eventually will have to be addressed by our authorities.
