An 18-year-old driver was arrested Friday evening after allegedly hitting triple-digit speeds on State Route 347 during rush hour, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A Highway Patrol trooper observed the vehicle traveling northbound on SR 347 in Pinal County on March 20. A LiDAR device recorded the car at 100 mph in a posted 65-mph zone.

The teen told the trooper he was “just trying to show off” to his passengers, DPS said.

He was arrested on suspicion of criminal speeding and reckless driving. The vehicle was released to the driver’s parents.

The arrest is part of DPS’ ongoing #SpeedingSaturday enforcement and awareness campaign, which regularly highlights dangerous driving behavior on Arizona roadways, including the heavily traveled SR 347 corridor used by Maricopa commuters.

The case is the third time this month a driver has been arrested after being clocked at 100 mph or more on SR 347.

On March 10, a trooper recorded a white Ford F-150 traveling 102 mph in a 65-mph zone just north of Maricopa city limits. The driver initially said his cruise control was set at 82 mph before telling troopers he was running late to a job site in Chandler. He was also accused of making multiple lane changes without signaling and passing vehicles traveling the posted speed limit. He was booked into jail, and the pickup was towed and impounded.

DPS has not identified that driver despite requests from InMaricopa. We’ve also requested the identity of this weekend’s arrestee.

Earlier in March, DPS did identify a Maricopa driver arrested after being clocked at 103 mph along the same stretch of highway. Senita resident Landon Eck, 32, was clocked at 103 mph in a 65-mph zone north of Maricopa. He told troopers he was trying to get home from work and was not used to the gas pedal in the vehicle. Eck was booked into the Pinal County jail on charges of criminal speed and reckless driving. The vehicle was towed and impounded, and he was later released.

That case remains pending in Western Pinal Justice Court.

  1. It’s always some “I liKe tO go FaaAaaSt” manchild chode doing crap like this and it’s not exclusive to the 347.

They’re always flying down Hogenes (in a school zone) in their poorly modded fartmobiles thinking they’re hot sh*t and McDavid is treated like a drag strip nearly every weekend.
