Maricopa Police Department will host its inaugural Bike Safety Rodeo next month, inviting families to a free, hands-on event focused on building safer, more confident young riders.
The event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 24 at the Maricopa Library.
Children will be able to navigate a bike skills course and practice essential techniques like stopping, turning and following basic rules of the road in a controlled environment.
The rodeo will also feature educational materials and local resource booths, along with bikes and scooters available on site for children who do not bring their own.
In partnership with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the event will include free helmet fittings and helmet giveaways while supplies last.
“These events are a great way for kids to build confidence on their bikes while learning important safety skills,” said Sgt. Hal Koozer, who leads the department’s Traffic Unit. “By practicing in a fun, structured setting, children can take what they’ve learned and apply it every time they ride.”
The event is open to children of all ages, with a focus on elementary-aged riders. No registration is required.
Leading up to the rodeo, MPD is also hosting the “Ride Safe Maricopa” Poster Contest, giving students a chance to creatively promote bicycle safety in their community.
From Monday through April 17, students can submit hand-drawn or digital posters illustrating what “Ride Safe Maricopa” means to them. Entries can be hand-delivered to the police station or submitted by email.
Winners will be announced at the April 24 rodeo.
The contest includes four age categories: kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, middle school (grades six through eight) and high school (grades nine through 12).
First-place winners will receive a bike, while second-place winners will receive a scooter. Additional prizes will be provided by local community members and organizations.
Selected artwork will also be displayed at schools across the city to promote safe riding habits among young cyclists.
