A heavy police presence and an ambulance response drew concern late Saturday night after a vehicle came to rest off the roadway near the intersection of Smith-Enke and Porter Roads, an area bordered by four Maricopa neighborhoods.

Maricopa police confirmed officers responded to a single-vehicle incident shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday in a vacant lot north of the intersection.

“Officers responded to a single vehicle off the roadway,” a Maricopa Police Department spokesperson said. “As officers approached the vehicle to check on the driver, the driver attempted to take their own life with a firearm. They were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their condition is unknown at this time.”

Police said multiple units were on scene as officers secured the area and rendered aid. The vehicle was later towed.

InMaricopa reader Russell Hunt, who lives on Davis Way in Rancho El Dorado, said he was awakened by the sound of metal dragging through dirt and rocks, followed by a loud crash just beyond his backyard wall.

“I was surprised when I looked out the window and there were several police cars and a car that was very close to my back wall,” Hunt said.

From a second-story window, Hunt captured video showing several Maricopa police vehicles surrounding the car and an ambulance transporting the driver after officers removed the person from the vehicle. Police tape was placed around the vacant lot and remained up later Sunday morning, Hunt said.

Another witness, Glennwilde resident Kim Glass, also reported seeing multiple police vehicles in the vacant lot across Porter Road near the T intersection around the same time.

The incident occurred near a busy crossroads that connects Rancho El Dorado, Province, Homestead and The Lakes.

Police did not release additional details about the driver or confirm whether a pursuit preceded the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
