When multiple police units rushed to The Duke golf club on Friday night, residents quickly began asking questions online.
A Facebook post in a local Maricopa community group drew dozens of comments from people who said they saw officers converge on the golf course and deploy a Taser, while others speculated about what might have happened.
Court records now show the police response stemmed from an unlawful imprisonment involving a woman and her child inside the golf club.
According to a probable cause statement filed in Western Pinal Justice Court, 24-year-old Robert E. Garner of Maricopa was arrested after an altercation with a woman at The Duke, located on Rancho El Dorado Parkway.
During the dispute, Garner allegedly pinned the woman against a wall while holding their child, restricting her movement and preventing her from leaving. The woman repeatedly told him to “get off me” and had to physically push him away to escape, according to the report.
Police wrote that restraining her while holding the child created a high likelihood the child could be injured.
Garner then continued following the woman around the property where she worked while yelling at her and disturbing customers inside the business, according to the court document.
At one point, the woman took their son into her custody while holding him. Garner allegedly wrapped his arms around her in a two-armed restraint and refused to let her and the child leave despite repeated requests for him to “let me go.”
Several workers eventually intervened and removed Garner from her, the report states.
Police say Garner also grabbed the woman’s arm multiple times, placing her in fear of imminent physical injury.
When officers attempted to arrest him, Garner resisted, according to the report. Officers deployed a Taser and struck him with closed-fist punches while trying to take him into custody as he continued resisting and reaching toward his waistband.
Garner later admitted he knew officers were trying to arrest him and said he “just went crazy,” according to the probable cause statement.
He was taken into custody around 7 p.m.
Garner faces 15 charges: assault, eight counts of disorderly conduct, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, four counts of resisting arrest and one count of child abuse.
