CLA — or the Connect, Love, Advocate — Autism Club is hosting its first annual Gentle Halloween trunk or treat event from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Molly’s House of Little Feet. 

It’s an event inspired by the founders’ three-year-old son, Landon, who has autism. 

“We saw a need for a different kind of event,” said club co-founder Skylar Oster. 

After his diagnosis, the couple noticed their toddler didn’t enjoy local activities the way their other children did because he would become so overstimulated. It made outings stressful for their family of six.  

“We love Maricopa and all the events they put on, but we couldn’t enjoy it like everyone else was enjoying it,” Oster said. 

They realized they needed a different approach to navigating Landon’s childhood experiences and outings. That eventually led to the creation of not only the CLA Autism Club, but also their Gentle Halloween event.  

The most notable difference between this and other Halloween events is it’s considered “low stim,” Oster said, meaning there’s an intentional reduction of noise, lighting and visual clutter, as well as slower pacing. Horns, flashing lights and loud music will be avoided to ensure the environment remains that way. 

Goodie bags will be provided, and food is available for purchase. Vendors include Kindness Evolves, McDonald’s and Cold Stone Creamery.  

There will be sensory tables, with items like kinetic sand, crinkle paper shreds and fidgets that provide ways for children to play and relax. Patrons will be limited by hour so they can take their time and enjoy their own pace, minimizing meltdowns and overwhelm. 

“Come as you are and take your time. It’s a judgment–free zone,” Stapleton said.
