Maricopa’s water is among the hardest in the U.S. Here’s what that means for homeowners

Kyle installs a residential water filtration system under a kitchen sink as part of a Clear Water Concepts in-home setup designed to address hard water and contaminants common in Maricopa.

Scott Blair knows hard water doesn’t just leave spots on your dishes. In Maricopa, it’s part of a broader water quality challenge that can affect everything from your morning coffee to your household plumbing.

In some cases, it can even affect your peace of mind.

“Water in Phoenix and the surrounding areas is probably some of the hardest in the nation,” said Blair, CEO of Valley-based Clear Water Concepts. “It’s almost as necessary as toilet paper to have a good water filtration system.”

The Phoenix metro area, which includes Maricopa, consistently ranks among the hardest-water regions in the country.

“If you look at a map of the hardest water in the United States, the Phoenix market is up there in the top spots,” Blair said.

That checks out. A glance at nearly any water hardness map online shows local water is rich in magnesium, calcium and other minerals. While those minerals may sound beneficial, they can wreak havoc on the average household.

They show up quickly around faucets and shower nozzles, but also inside pipes, water heaters and other appliances. Over time, Blair said, that buildup can shorten the lifespan of common household systems, including water heaters.

And hard water isn’t the only concern.

Municipal water supplies can also contain other contaminants. While these systems meet strict state and federal regulations, Blair said many homeowners still worry about what may be coming out of their tap.

“All water that comes from the or surface water, are going to have some form of contaminants in it,” he said, noting those can include trace amounts of arsenic, nitrates, chromium and a group of chemicals known as PFAS.

“Those leech into water systems and municipalities will treat it the best they can, but they can’t completely remove it. Most of it is removed to a level that’s safely consumable,” Blair said.

That’s where Clear Water Concepts comes in.

Founded in 1998, the company has spent decades working specifically with Arizona’s challenging water conditions. Blair took over the business a couple of years ago and said their focus is on tailoring systems to each household’s needs.

“Especially the people who have health conditions or specific concerns, we can customize our systems for what their needs are,” he said.

Clear Water Concepts offers water softeners, whole-house filtration systems and reverse osmosis options designed to address both hard water and common contaminants found in and around Maricopa.

After 27 years in the business, Blair said the company is looking forward to continuing to help Maricopans improve their water quality.

“We do offer a free in-home water test,” he said. “We are a no-pressure, no scare tactics company. We are a solutions-based company.”
