If you were driving Maricopa roads this morning, especially near schools, you probably saw a few extra police officers and sheriff’s deputies on the roads. You might have even seen Frank Sloup of Fridays with Frank fame out and about.
The extra patrols coincided with Maricopa Unified School District’s first day of school, part of a one-day traffic enforcement campaign aimed at cracking down on unsafe driving in school zones.
Operation Safe Start brought officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Casa Grande and Eloy, said city officials in a news release.
“School zones deserve our full attention and care,” said Maricopa Police Sgt. Hal Koozer, who is leading the operation. “We know mornings can be hectic and routines take time to settle, but that’s exactly why it’s important to plan ahead, slow down and make safe driving decisions. A few extra minutes can make all the difference in protecting our kids.”

Koozer urged motorists to treat the zones with caution year-round.
“Whether you’re dropping off your kids, heading to class, or just driving through the area, take it slow, stay off your phone, and pay attention. We all play a part in keeping these zones safe,” he said.
Although Operation Safe Start is scheduled for one day, Maricopa police said they will continue monitoring school zones throughout the school year. The department posts traffic safety reminders and road closure alerts on its social media pages.

Over at MUSD, the district starts the 2025 academic year with more than 10,000 enrolled students for the first time. Yesterday, nearly 1,300 MUSD employees — including four new principals — and dignitaries gathered for the district’s annual Welcome Back Celebration.
“We’re excited to kick off another amazing school year with our students and staff,” said the district in a statement this morning. “Here’s to a year of learning, growth and new memories!”
