More than 7 in 10 of voters backed incumbent Mayor Nancy Smith over her opponent, Leon Potter, in an InMaricopa poll of 258 random voters this week.
Smith (71%) outperformed Potter (28%) in the unscientific poll.
Eleven respondents indicated they would vote for write-in candidates, including former Mayor Christian Price, Councilmember Henry Wade and “anyone else.” Some people have already voted as early ballots were mailed July 3.
A minority said they supported Potter’s platform of slowing the city’s growth, including Glennwilde resident Dustin Williams.
“Potter is a good-hearted man and loves our city,” Williams said. “One thing he told me was his priority to slow down the housing until we can have better infrastructure and a 347 fix.”
Carol Swindall of Acacia Crossings simply said, “It’s just time for a change.”
The primary election, which includes municipal races like this one, is July 30.
