Pinal County just dropped the latest primary election results and it looks like most Maricopa voters don’t want their city to stop growing, after all.
With more than half the votes in, InMaricopa projects Mayor Nancy Smith will retain her seat as the city’s first female mayor. She won 63% of votes over challenger Leon Potter, 36%.
Write-in candidates took 30 votes, half a percent.
“I’m delighted with the first results and certainly hope that the final count results in a clear direction,” Smith told InMaricopa.
Despite trailing 27 points today, Potter said he won’t concede the race until the Pinal County Board of Supervisors ratifies the result Aug. 12.
“I’m not conceding yet because anything is possible, but it looks like Mayor Smith will be elected,” he said. “I respect the outcome. The voters have spoken, and I respect that as part of the process.”
Potter added that while he hoped for a tighter race, he believes he offered a voice to community members unsatisfied with the standing regime.
“Accountability doesn’t go away,” he said. “There was a concern about certain decisions that have been made and that doesn’t disappear. The mayor and council are still accountable to the public.”
An InMaricopa poll of 258 voters July 12 poised Smith to win in a landslide.
