Tesla renter tied to $1.2K vacuum fraud at Walmart — that sucks

Thinking you got away with defrauding a Maricopa business and the police catch you two months later — that’s got to suck.

Maricopa Police Department filed charges Thursday against 34-year-old David Hodge after tying him to a vacuum purchase made with counterfeit money.

It all started Jan. 16 when officers responded to Walmart on a report that a man had entered the store and purchased a vacuum sealer and vacuum bags worth $489.27 with $500 in fake bills.

He had left the store in a white Tesla with Nevada plates before officers arrived, but store security told the police that the same man and a female accomplice had stolen $700 worth of vacuum sealing equipment from a Chandler Walmart just two days prior.

The Tesla used in both heists was found to be rented by a woman named Sydney Johnson, who was the same female accomplice at the Chandler location but not in Maricopa.

MPD lodged charges against Hodge of burglary, possessing burglary tools, forgery and fraud. He faces more than two decades in prison.
