Province residents are known for giving back in big ways and sometimes they like to mix in a little fun — and a little booze.
Members of that community recently saw the return of their monthly “Thirsty Thirdsday” social event and, with that, a chance to give back to the F.O.R. Maricopa food bank while sipping a brew or two.
“We get a small percentage of the money that comes in for the alcohol,” said F.O.R. Maricopa Executive Director Wendy Webb. “This year, we’ve also been trying to use the event as an opportunity to share more about tax credits and to get more volunteers for the food bank.”
She’s talking about the state tax credits available to taxpayers who donate to charities like the food bank. Each year a single person can claim up to $421, while a married couple can claim $841.
“You take that money you’re donating to us, and it becomes a credit on your taxes,” Webb said. “If, say, you owe the state $2,000 and you’re a married couple, you could donate $841 to the food bank and that will count towards the amount you owed.”
Webb called it a “great opportunity” to reinvest tax money to nonprofits in the state.
Province Lifestyle Director Michelle Trujillo was unavailable for comment.
The community’s next Thirsty Thirdsday is scheduled for Dec. 19 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Province Town Hall. The local cover band The Vibe AZ, comprised of five Maricopa senior adults, performs live music at the events.
