A motorcyclist was hospitalized this morning after fleeing a Maricopa Police Department traffic stop and slamming into the back of a Maricopa Fire Department truck that was waiting at a red light, according to an MPD spokesperson.

The attempted stop began about 10:45 a.m. when an officer tried to pull over the motorcycle near Smith-Enke Road and John Wayne Parkway, the spokesperson told InMaricopa. Investigators said the rider sped south on John Wayne Parkway, then struck the rear of a fire truck that was stopped at the intersection.

Firefighters on board the truck immediately rendered aid, stabilizing the rider until additional medical crews arrived. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for further treatment. Police did not release the rider’s identity or condition this afternoon.

No firefighters or officers were hurt, and the fire apparatus sustained only minor damage, the spokesperson said.

Detectives are still working to determine why the rider fled the stop. MPD has not announced any citations or charges.
