The Arizona Department of Public Safety has disclosed new details about the C7 Corvette that smashed into the sign at the southern entrance to Maricopa’s Cobblestone Farms neighborhood after a dangerous flight from law enforcement late Saturday night.
Just before midnight, an unmarked AZDPS state trooper on State Route 347 tried to pull over the Corvette for speeding. This comes at the same time state troopers say they are ramping up speeding arrests on that highway.
DPS identified the suspect driver as a 16-year-old boy from Phoenix.
The unnamed boy “was driving at 103 miles per hour when he fled the traffic stop before crashing into a wall” at John Wayne Parkway and Cobblestone Farms Drive South, DPS spokesperson Bart Graves said today.
Reporters on the scene Saturday saw the white sports car with heavy front-end damage and deployed airbags disabled next to the monument sign. The boy was seen sitting on the curb. Later, he was seen being assisted onto a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.
“The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment,” Graves said. “Because he is a juvenile, he was turned over to the custody of his parents as the criminal investigation is ongoing.”
