Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash this afternoon that shut down traffic near Butterfield Elementary School.

Phoenix Regional Dispatch reported the collision at 2:38 p.m. at Butterfield Parkway and Duncan Drive. A white Chevrolet Trax SUV, which was traveling eastbound on Butterfield Parkway, sustained heavy front-end damage, with airbags deployed.

The crash appeared to be a T-bone collision involving a dark gray Ford Explorer SUV, which had visible damage to the driver’s side front door.

Medics treated a female who was lying on the ground at the scene, as well as a young girl who was sitting on the curb nearby. Their conditions have not yet been released.

Maricopa Fire Department’s Engine 575, four Maricopa Police Department units and one ambulance responded to the scene. Duncan Drive remains closed, and traffic is being rerouted around the crash site as crews continue their investigation.

Maricopa Unified School District spokesperson Mishell Terry said the elementary school was not impacted because class was not in session today for Good Friday.
