Road rage arrests continue in Maricopa

More short-tempered motorists jailed after 2 shot on city road in January

Two separate road rage incidents in February have led to arrests in Maricopa, according to newly filed court records — the latest flare-ups on local roads just weeks after a January highway shooting left two people injured, one gravely.

In one case, 59-year-old Michael Ray Butler was arrested Feb. 21 after police say he forced another driver off Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and prevented him from leaving the scene during a confrontation near Stonegate Road.

According to a probable cause statement filed in Western Pinal Justice Court, an officer on patrol around 1:50 p.m. observed a motorcycle force a gray sedan off the roadway and pull up next to the driver’s window while appearing to yell at the driver.

Police say Butler positioned his motorcycle in a way that prevented the sedan from driving away. When the officer activated lights and sirens, Butler allegedly attempted to flee before stopping when the officer stepped in front of him.

The driver of the sedan told police he had attempted to pass the motorcycle after believing it was turning. He reported that the motorcyclist began yelling and making obscene gestures before pulling alongside his vehicle and forcing him onto the shoulder, blocking his movement.

Butler told police during a post-Miranda interview that he believed the other driver was about to rear-end him.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct and reckless driving and booked into the Pinal County jail.

In a separate incident Feb. 15, 68-year-old Steven Bruce Boe was arrested after police responded to a reported disturbance near John Wayne Parkway and West Edison Road on the main strip.

According to records filed in Maricopa Municipal Court, officers received reports of two men involved in a physical altercation, with one punching the other. Both vehicles reportedly left the scene.

Police located a Chevy Silverado matching the description and conducted a traffic stop, identifying Boe as the driver.

Boe told officers he had been traveling southbound on John Wayne Parkway when a vehicle behind him began honking and tailgating. After turning onto Edison Road, he said the other vehicle pulled in front of his truck, preventing him from moving forward.

Both drivers exited their vehicles. Boe admitted striking the other man first with a closed fist, hitting him in the jaw, according to the report.

Police cited video evidence showing Boe’s truck stopped on Edison Road just east of John Wayne Parkway, obstructing the roadway.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct and obstructing a thoroughfare.

Both recent cases remain pending in court.

  1. Maricopa drivers are out of control. 347 should be treated like a danger zone. Too much anger, and way too many aggressive drivers on this highway.
