Court records filed today provide new details about the charges and evidence tied to the Saturday road rage shooting on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway near Russell Road that left two people injured.

According to a document submitted to Western Pinal Justice Court, 27-year-old Jacob A. Beigel of Coolidge faces multiple felony charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, drive-by shooting and criminal damage.

The document identifies the victims as Sean Valdez and Carmel Alcon. Police previously had not released the victims’ names.

The shooting occurred at about 7:21 p.m. Jan. 3 during what investigators describe as a road rage incident. Alcon was shot in the arm, while Valdez was shot in the head, according to the court filing. Both survived.

Maricopa Police Department investigators identified Beigel as a suspect and later detained him while executing a search warrant at his residence, the report states. During the search, officers located identifying documents, Toyota keys, a bank card, Beigel’s driver license, a Sig 9mm cartridge casing and a Hellcat 9mm cardboard box believed to be associated with the firearm used in the shooting.

The report notes that a 9mm casing recovered from Beigel’s bedroom had characteristics consistent with casings found at the shooting scene, including an ejector mark at the 11 o’clock position, parallel breech face markings and an elliptical firing pin aperture with a drag mark. Investigators documented that all casings were Sig 9mm Luger ammunition with nickel cases and brass primers.

One casing from the residence and one from the scene were entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. According to the filing, analysis indicated the casings were most likely fired from the same firearm and were of the same make and model.

After the search warrant was completed, Beigel was initially released before ballistic evidence was fully compared, the report states. He was later arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation.
