Teen with red-hot knife arrested after siblings barricade themselves in Maricopa Meadows home

Cops lodge multiple child endangerment charges

Maricopa police arrested an 18-year-old man after officers responded to a report that he was threatening to hurt himself while armed with a hot knife inside a Maricopa Meadows home where three younger siblings were present, according to a police report.

Officers were dispatched at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to a residence on Windmill Drive after a caller reported that Josiah Nicholson was off his medication, angry and using a knife heated with a lighter to burn himself, the report states.

Police arrived minutes later and found Nicholson outside in the street “with an aggressive stance yelling at houses,” officers wrote in a probable cause statement. Officers ordered him to lie on the ground and detained him, finding no weapons during a search.

Officers then entered the home and contacted three children identified as Nicholson’s younger siblings. The children had barricaded themselves in a downstairs bedroom.

One sibling told officers Nicholson had recently returned home from the hospital after attempting suicide and began destroying items inside the home after their parents left. The sibling reported Nicholson had a knife and lighter and was heating the blade.

Another sibling told police she saw Nicholson holding a lighter and heard it flickering before she and the other children hid in a closet because they were frightened.

Nicholson later told an officer he had become suicidal after his girlfriend broke up with him about 30 minutes before the incident, according to the report. He said he told the children to go into the bedroom so he would not hurt them before he began destroying property.

Officers conducting a sweep of the home reported seeing holes punched in drywall and furniture and other items thrown around, including a table, chair, speaker and surveillance cameras. Police also reported finding an opened pocketknife on a bathroom counter.

Nicholson was arrested on suspicion of three counts of disorderly conduct involving domestic violence, one count of criminal damage involving domestic violence and three counts of child endangerment involving domestic violence.

According to court records, Nicholson has no prior criminal record.
