A Tucson man charged with human smuggling last year was on the run from the authorities for six weeks before he was ultimately arrested at a Maricopa Circle K Wednesday.
Maricopa police arrested Jared Lee Staats, 38, around 10:30 p.m. after they spotted him fixing his girlfriend’s taillight at the Circle K near Alterra.
The girlfriend’s license was revoked and Staats couldn’t find his own, so he told the officers his name, according to a probable cause statement. Upon looking him up, officers found out he had a live warrant for his arrest.
The police arrested Staats and transported him to the Pinal County jail.
Staats had been arrested in October on nine felony charges in Cochise County. He was charged with human smuggling, dangerous drugs, six counts of endangerment and evading pursuing law enforcement.
Staats pleaded guilty to fleeing officers, a felony, in a December plea bargain.
Staats was sentenced to three months deferred jail time and three years on probation, according to Cochise County Superior Court records obtained by InMaricopa. Judge Timothy Dickerson stipulated that he could not consume or possess alcohol.
The warrant had been issued Feb. 11. It’s unclear why Staats, who has Tucson and Phoenix addresses in court documents, was in Maricopa that day.
