Two riders were taken to the hospital last night after separate crashes on opposite sides of the city, authorities said.
The first collision was reported at 7:09 p.m. at Backus Drive and Rancho El Dorado Parkway in the Rancho El Dorado neighborhood.
“An individual riding a gas-powered bicycle with no lights … struck a truck as the truck made a turn onto Rancho,” a Maricopa Police Department spokesperson said Monday night. “The rider was transported to the hospital.”
An hour later, at 8:09 p.m., officers and fire crews responded to a second crash involving a motorcycle at John Wayne Parkway and Edison Road on the main strip.
Readers reported traffic backed up in front of Culver’s as a large emergency response converged on the intersection. Submitted photos showed police and fire vehicles converging on all four sides of the intersection.
Monica Williams, spokesperson for the city, said the crash involved a motorcycle and another vehicle.
“The motorcycle rider was transported to the hospital,” Williams confirmed.
She said the crash report is still being finalized and authorities have not yet determined who was at fault or how seriously the rider was injured.
The back-to-back incidents come less than a week after a 13-year-old cyclist was hospitalized when an SUV struck the child in a crosswalk at the Porter Road intersection along Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. Police said the child had a green light to cross and cited the driver. The child, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to the hospital.
That crash followed multiple pedestrian collisions earlier in the month, including one at the same Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway corridor that killed a 24-year-old woman. Investigations into Monday night’s crashes are ongoing.
