Maricopa City Council on Tuesday will consider purchase of 24.2 acres of Maricopa Unified School District land for $3.88 million.

MUSD spokeswoman Mishell Terry said the district found the land to be unsuitable for a future school.

The acreage is east of West Rancho El Dorado Parkway and on both sides of West Placone Way around the new Lake View Park.

The property to the north side of West Placone is earmarked for the city’s future reclaimed water aquifer recharge site, which the city will build from federal funding along with Global Water Resources.

The property to the south of West Placone would be used for future parkland and ballparks adjoining the existing Lake View Park’s playground and ballparks off Powers Parkway West.

“The aquifer recharge project is in the fiscal year 2024-25 budget and will commence immediately,” City Manager Ben Bitter said Friday. “Thus, the $2.10 million for the cost of the land at the aquifer recharge site will be reimbursed to the city.”

MUSD Governing Board will consider the purchase sale agreement with the city for the land July 10.

Bitter said, although there are no immediate plans or designs to expand Lake View Park, the possibilities will be explored as part of the annual budget process starting this winter.

“The park will be expanded, based on need, at a future time,” Bitter said.
