Suspected distracted driver hospitalized after wall collision on Smith-Enke

A single-vehicle crash shut down westbound Smith-Enke Road before 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night, after a driver drifted into the opposite lane, nearly hit another vehicle and overcorrected into a wall, according to authorities.

The crash occurred on Smith-Enke between Santa Rosa Drive and Porter Road.

Monica Williams, spokesperson for the city’s police and fire departments, said distracted driving appears to be the cause.

It’s unclear what the citations will be at this moment, but it’s “highly likely they will receive appropriate citations,” Williams told InMaricopa.

Williams said the driver was transported to a hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported.

Westbound lanes were closed while police and fire units cleared the scene. Witnesses perched along the neighborhood’s brick wall, looking down on the sedan that had slammed in head-first while crews shoveled debris from the street.
