A motorcyclist was hospitalized but survived after a collision with a Jeep that caused hours of rush-hour delays on State Route 347 yesterday evening, according to authorities.
The crash, which occurred just after 6 p.m. near Casa Blanca Road about 3 miles north of city limits, brought traffic to a standstill in both directions for miles.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bart Graves this afternoon said the motorcycle rider sustained back injuries but “managed to limp off the roadway” before being transported to Chandler Regional Medical Center.
A passerby stopped to assist the injured man. Graves said the rider was wearing a helmet.
Drivers reported stop-and-go conditions stretching roughly 12 miles between Maricopa and Chandler. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s AZ511 traffic map showed the highway in the red from South Maricopa Road near Wild Horse Pass down to city limits as troopers investigated.
The collision involved a dark-colored Honda street bike traveling north out of Maricopa. It happened about 30 minutes after another, unrelated crash stalled commuters farther south on SR 347 after a driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI in front of Fry’s Marketplace.
Traffic began moving again later in the evening after the scene was cleared. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
