If you haven’t yet been satiated with your weekly dose of State Route 347 news, here’s an extra helping.
The Arizona Department of Transportation plans to install at least one sign in each direction telling slowpoke drivers to stay in the right lane when traveling on the state highway.
It’s only the law, after all.
“The team is currently evaluating the details of the sign and placement … and then will work with the Gila River Indian Community to discuss where and how the signs will be installed,” said Kimberly Larson, the community relations project manager for ADOT.
The signs could be installed in the next three months, Larson said.
This move by the state agency could be the first step toward state Rep. Teresa Martinez’s House Bill 2235, which would target and fine drivers who camp in the left lane on two-lane highways such as SR 347.
Martinez, the Casa Grande Republican, represents the city of Maricopa at the State Capitol.
“They just back up traffic and I think that’s where your road rage comes in, and that’s where people really start getting frustrated because you have one guy who’s driving very, very slow,” Martinez told InMaricopa in January.
Her bill would fine drivers up to $250 for camping in the left lane. It is currently moving through the state senate since the Committee on Public Safety this week unanimously passed the bill.
Once the signs go up on SR 347, such citations will be harder to beat in court.
