A Desert Sunrise High School teacher was seriously injured in a devastating crash that shut down Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway for hours Tuesday night, according to sources who know her. Heavy rush-hour traffic backed up for miles after at least one vehicle rolled over near Montgomery Road.
Multiple witnesses described seeing a medical helicopter land in the roadway to take at least one patient from the scene. Others reported two vehicles appearing to have rolled. None of those details have been confirmed by law enforcement.
The victim has been identified by students as an English teacher at the city’s newer high school who did not report to work Wednesday. A student in her class told InMaricopa the teacher was airlifted to a major Phoenix hospital and is currently stable with a long recovery ahead.
Drivers said the closure began shortly before dusk and lasted well into the evening. Several Maricopa commuters were stuck in gridlock for more than two hours as first responders worked the scene.
InMaricopa has contacted the Casa Grande Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Ak-Chin Police and Fire Departments and Pinal County Sheriff’s Office since Tuesday to determine which agency handled the response. As of Friday afternoon, all of the agencies had responded to inquiries but none of them have taken responsibility for the incident or released information.
This is a developing story. InMaricopa will update as soon as any agency provides an official report or confirms details about the crash and the teacher’s condition.
Last month, a Maricopa driver who allegedly caused a separate rollover crash on the MCG Highway was charged with aggravated DUI, weapons misconduct, driving on a suspended license and not having a valid driver’s license. That case is pending.
